The Cutting Process for Fiber Optic Fabrics

An optical fiber fabric is a special type of fabric. Just like other fabrics, they also need to be cut before they can be processed and applied.

So, how do you cut optical fiber fabric? Are there certain factors to keep in mind when cutting?

The first thing we need is a basic understanding of optical fiber fabrics. A fiber optic fabric is also known as luminous fabric, LED luminous fabric, or optical fabric, since it comprises plastic optical fibers as warp or weft threads which are interlaced to result in a fibrous fabric.

It is high-tech fabric that can glow and change color with plastic optical fibers and F5LEDs connected through electrical control systems and optical processing.

In fiber optic fabrics, light is produced by coupling the light source with the light guide fiber in the fabric, so that the light from the light source is revealed through the light guide fiber.

This is why it is so important to pay close attention when cutting fiber optic fabric. The key point is to make sure that all optical fibers in the area that needs illumination are coupled to the light source.

Using this core principle, we can understand a second core principle of fiber optic fabrics: one or both ends of the fiber optic fabric contain a section of optical fiber. The end thread of an optical fiber cannot be entwined with other warp and weft threads in the fabric, as illustrated in the figure.

Therefore, we have decided to name the end of the fiber fabric with the light guide fibers named end B, and the end of the weft length named end A.

The following are the specific methods for cutting specific shapes of optical fiber fabric pieces:

A) Geometrical fiber fabric cutting:

1. Square and rectangular fiber fabric cutting

There are many shapes to choose from, but this is the simplest. As shown in the figure, you can leave the fiber at the B end, but the other ends can be cut as normal.

2. Triangular fiber fabric cutting

As shown in the figure below:

3. Trapezoidal fiber fabric cutting

As shown in the figure below:

4. Cutting of fan-shaped and circular shape optical fiber fabric

As shown in the figure below:

B) Cutting of optical fiber fabric with special designs:

1. Cutting of clothing pieces

As shown in the figure below:

2. Cutting of optical fiber fabric with special props

As shown in the figure below:

Fabric pieces must be cut and the fibers at the B end must be combined with the LED light source, in order to process the semi-finished product, which can be used to make the designed finished product.

It is possible to outsource the processing and production of semi-finished luminous fiber fabric pieces as well.

LUMISONATA currently offers this service. A lot of their equipment is automated, and their workers are highly trained.

All you need to do is send the design requirements for luminous fiber fabric pieces to LUMISONATA, they will assist you efficiently and professionally.
